In 1941, the Bonneville Power Association commissioned Woody Guthrie to write songs for a film promoting public power and Columbia River development. Guthrie, 28 at the time, went to the Northwest and in the span of a month wrote some of his most classic songs: "Roll On Columbia," "Pastures of Plenty" and "Grand Coulee Dam" among them. Of the seventeen songs on this collection, only six of the original recordings had appeared previously on any album.
