What to Enter
We are looking for quality images that capture the beauty and uniqueness of natural features and phenomena in the Northwest. Whether it’s a crimson sunset on a rocky Northwest beach or an up-close and personal shot of an iridescent dragonfly (just to name a few examples), we welcome images taken in the Northwest that highlight the natural scenery, flora and fauna, the history, or people peacefully enjoying and observing them all.
Categories:
Northwest Flora
For this category, we are looking for images of native Northwest flora. From giant old-growth Douglas firs to delicate lichens, if you have an image of Northwest flora worthy of notice, we want to see it! (XYNW08-Flora)
Northwest Wildlife
In this category, we want to see your best images of Northwest
wildlife in its natural habitat. Whether majestic eagles or colorful
sea stars, we are looking for high quality images of native Northwest
wildlife enjoying their natural surroundings. (XYNW08-Wildlife)
Northwest Scenic Landscapes
This category is reserved for images that show Northwest natural landscapes in all their grandeur or even in their quieter, serener moments. From magnificent snowcapped mountains to the more secluded hidden gems along the Washington or Oregonian coastline, here’s an opportunity to show us your best and most beautiful images taken in these unique places of the Northwest. (XYNW08-Landscapes)
People in Nature
Do you know someone who likes to hike, climb, dive, snowshoe, ski, bird-watch, or simply sit back and watch the grass grow? Chances are you do and if that’s the case, we’d like to see them in action! For this category, we are looking for people enjoying the natural environment with the presiding element in images being the beauty of the surroundings and/or natural object of admiration. So if you have an image of mountain climbers traversing up a steep and beautifully pristine snowy slope or a child gazing at a little frog, this is the category for you. Please be sure to check out our Pictures of People discussion for more details and requirements regarding images of people. (XYNW08-People)
Winners of the above four categories will be determined by public vote in the Experience Your Northwest discussion thread after closing of submissions.
Last but not least, we are including a People’s Choice category where the 4 winning images from the above categories will be posted in a group discussion for a final vote for top image. The Peoples Choice voting for the best of Experience Your Northwest opens May 9th and closes May 23rd. Once we tally up the votes, we’ll announce the grand prize winner on the Flickr™ Experience Your Northwest group page and on the NWIA web site. Keep checking Experience Your Northwest for more information.

As a guide for locations to take your pictures in, we encourage you to check out the Where We Are discussion post on our Experience Your Northwest group page.
Judging
Images entered into the Experience Your Northwest Photo Contest will be judged on subject matter, composition, technical excellence, visual impact, and originality. The judges are a panel of Northwest Interpretive Association staff members familiar with photography and responsible for selecting images for various Northwest Interpretive Association print materials. The panel of judges reserves the right to deny any image submitted to the pool that it deems inappropriate. Any decisions made by judges are final.
Winners
A winner and 2 honorable mentions will be selected for each category through public voting, which will take place on the Flickr Experience Your Northwest page in 4 separate discussion threads. In addition, the four winning category images will be posted for the People’s Choice division in a discussion thread for final voting for the overall contest winner.
Prizes
The winner of the People’s Choice division will receive a Washington and Oregon Recreation Pass, which provides access to state parks in Washington and Oregon and also includes the America the Beautiful Pass allowing access to most national parks and federal recreation sites across the country.
Category winners will receive an NWIA Annual Membership, which includes a 15% discount on all merchandise on our NWIA Online Store and walk-in bookstores (native crafts and passes excluded) around the Northwest.
Category winners and honorable mentions will be announced on May 9th. The People’s Choice Grand Prize Winner will be announced on May 30th. All winner and honorable mention images will be featured on the NWIA website and the Flickr Experience Your Northwest group page.
